Boost Your Self-Confidence and Connect to Inner Peace (Part III)

How to Boost Your Self-Confidence with the Power of Concentration…

"If we know the divine art of concentration, if we know the divine art of meditation, if we know the divine art of contemplation, easily and consciously we can unite the inner and outer world."

Sri Chinmoy

This is Part III following the Part II from the series “Boost Your Self-Confidence”.

In the last article I gave you some useful instructions on how to change mental attitude and mindset by concentrating or focusing your mind on positivity. In this part of the series I’m going to give you some practical techniques which will help to increase your ability to concentrate.

Why is it important to have this ability to concentrate? Well when we have an impulsive, emotional, out of control, and untrained mind, it is very hard to become self-confident. So if you like to change your mindset and become confident, personally magnetic and influential person, you would also have to develop and train your mind, so it becomes strong with the ability to concentrate.

How can we develop our concentration?

Concentration of the mind can only be developed by watching yourself closely. All kinds of development begin with close attention or awareness. You should be able to regulate your every thought and feeling. When you begin to watch yourself, your own acts and also the acts of other people – your abilities to focus increase. So as you continue to do so you improve your abilities, until in time you can chose every thought, wish and plan. To be able to focus the mind on the object at hand in a conscious manner leads to concentration. Only a trained mind can focus. When we can direct our energies and hold them at work in a concentrated manner, we can make every move serve a useful end and every thought a noble purpose.

The person with self-confidence speaks with slowness and deliberation. They are cultivating more and more of a calm attitude. They are consciously attentive and hold their mind to one thing at a time. They shut out everything else.

Let’s look at some techniques to increase and improve your ability to concentrate:

#1 Start out in the morning and see how self-poised you can remain all day. At times take an inventory of your actions during the day and see if you have kept your determination. If not, see that you do tomorrow. The more self-poised you are the better will your concentration be. Never be in too much of a hurry; and, remember, the more you improve your concentration, the greater are your possibilities. Concentration means success, because you are better able to govern yourself and centralize your mind; you become more in earnest in what you do and this almost invariably improves your chances for success.

#2 When you are talking to a person use your ‘confident listening’ skills. If you have ever associated with influential people, or read their biographies, you will find that they usually let the others do the talking. It is much easier to talk than it is to listen.  So when you are talking to anyone give that person your sole and undivided attention. Do not let your attention wander or be diverted. Give no heed to anything else, but make your will and intellect act in unison. There is no better exercise for concentration than to pay close attention when someone is talking. Besides learning from what they have to say, you may develop both mental and physical concentration.

#3 The next exercise is very simple to do. I want you to watch the next person you see that has the reputation of being a strong character, a man of force. Watch and see what a perfect control he has over his body. Then I want you to watch just an ordinary person. Notice how he moves his eyes, arms, fingers; notice the useless expenditure of energy. All these unnecessary movements lessen the person’s power and energy.

#4 Focus your mind on one purpose, one plan, one transaction. Whenever you fix your mind on a certain thought and hold your mind on it at successive intervals, you develop concentration. Therefore when you spend your time with your children give them undivided attention. When you work focus on that what you do. When you have to meet someone be on time and not late. This is how you can make yourself be more steady and systematic and it is developing a habit. If you hold your mind on some chosen object, you centralize your attention, just like the lens of the camera centralizes on a certain landscape. Therefore always hold your mind on what you are doing, no matter what it is. Keep a careful watch over yourself, for unless you do your improvement will be very slow.

#5 Any physical exercises that give you better control of the ears, fingers, eyes, feet, help you to steady your mind. Because actions are the expressions of the mind. As the mind is, so is the action. If it is uneasy, restless, erratic, unsteady, its actions are the same. When it is composed, the mind is composed. Concentration means control of the mind and body. You cannot secure control over one without the other. Yoga is one of great exercises to do, as it combines breathing and slow steady body movements. Meditation also is a very good practise. If you are new to it or don't know how…grab my free report whilst available. I included in the report clear and easy baby steps for any beginner.

…Many people who seem to lack ambition have sluggish minds. They are steady, patient and seemingly have good control, but this does not say they are able to concentrate. These people are indolent, inactive, slow and listless, because they lack energy; they do not lose control because they have little force to control. They have no temper and it therefore cannot disturb them. Their actions are steady because they possess little energy.

…The self-confident person is internally strong, energetic and forceful, but his energy, force and strength, thoughts and physical movements are well under his control.

Life and practical experiences are the best teachers. :)

… Just start with paying attention to people and their expressions first, it will help you to start improving your own abilities to control and lead your mind and body in direction you want. I wish you good luck, and I wish myself good luck too… as I'm still learning and improving my own abilities too.

Let's do it together!

I'm going to write next week about the influence of physical exercises on self-confidence together with easy instructions.

Please share your thoughts, stories, experiences in the comment section below. I'd love to hear from you! :)

I think this is a topic that if we were all to be honest we have all dealt with from time to time. It was of particular interest to me how others done this….”They are consciously attentive and hold their mind to one thing at a time. They shut out everything else…..

I am learning and have spent a great deal of time this year working on consciousness and just being… so I can pass it on to others. Thanks for all you do :)

HI Solvita. Great advice here – thank you. I have used the term “active listening” to refer to your #2 which absolutely requires the ability to communicate. This includes listening and not just to yourself talking LOL. My favorite quote is: “You have two ears and one mouth so you can listen twice as much as you talk”! Thanks for sharing your insights!

Reply

Solvita Bennett August 24, 2011

Dear Julie, it is great to see you around – yes confidence is often active process, and when we listen confidently we are active listeners, without this wonderful skill we can’t become good communicators – its clever – isn’t it! :)

Solvita,

Part of the problem of out of control emotions and sluggish minds is nutritional degeneration. Our brains are literally not getting enough nutrition because they are not adequately supplied by foods due to poor stewardship of the soil that grows our plants. My observation of human health is that this lack of mineral nutrition affects both the body and the mind. It seems to me that women show this deficiency earlier and differently than men. For women it strongly hits their emotions. For men it is kept in longer but if not corrected they can eventually snap on go on a rampage much more damaging that women losing their emotional control.

Many children seem to have sluggish minds.
Thanks for the post,
Jon

Dear Jon thanks for making us aware of this! Nutrition is an important part and I believe that by being able to control our emotions we would also chose nutrition more wisely – all starts with the ability to make the right decision… Thanks for your comment!

hi Solvita , I just read this massage..I am a very less concentrate and less confident girl but after reading this i am going to follow it and after that i will comment that it improves my confidence and concentration or not. due to lack of these things i failed in many interviews so if these tips will help me to get what i lost then i will be very much thankful to you.

Reply

Solvita Bennett January 26, 2013

Thank you Madhuri. Please you are welcome to use these tips, and there are plenty of others in posts. The problem often is fear. Fear of being misunderstood, not liked, not seen as good enough. The first thing in an interview is have full trust in yourself and being yourself of course. Preparation is key and calmness is important for confidence and success. Once you do your best, even if you don’t succeed, you will have no guilt and so when you go to any interview let the pressure go, listen, be positive, friendly and remember… you can’t do better than your BEST. This idea will calm your mind. It takes practice to calm your mind and be positive, yet this combination is what you need. Thank you so much for stopping by! :)
